What is Project DUMBO?

Project DUMBO is a course offered by Elmira College where seven students live in a loft in an artistic community of New York City know was DUMBO. There are seven of us living in New York City this year, experiencing the ins and outs of the art world. This blog is about our various adventures in the big city. And yes, we all share one bathroom.

This is Our Mecca

Welcome to Project Dumbo. You might wonder what this is. Seven art students from Elmira College are chosen to live in NYC and part take in a hands on experience in the art world. It's sort of like the Real World, except we are not chosen based on extravagant personalities or potential for drama. We experience an incredible amount of just about everything during our month long stay. We make regular trips to galleries, museums, artists' studios and get a taste of what it is like to be an artist in New York.

But there's more than the art aspect to the trip. We are thrown into and forced to interact with culture as it exists in NYC. This includes various types of ethnic cuisines, living together in a loft, navigating the subways, to name a few things.

Why are we here? Well, I can't speak for everyone. I come from a small town, so the grand scale of the city was already intriguing to me. But what is universal to everyone that experiences Project Dumbo is the incredible amount of learning that can only take place in this environment. This course, and yes, it is a college course, is the only course like it in the world and it is remarkably unique experience. No book or lecture could encompass the genuine experience that this course offers. The lessons we'll learn over the next month about art, food, social encounters, and basically life in general are parts of this trip that you cannot find anywhere else.

Over the next month we'll be updating this blog in part as a record, but also to give others a glimpse of what we are doing here. We'll update it with sketches, discussions we may have, and anecdotes from that day's encounters. Enjoy.
